It's common for people to use "renovation" and "remodel" interchangeably, but they actually refer to distinct types of home improvement projects. A renovation project primarily involves restoring a space to its previous state or updating its appearance with emphasis on refreshing and revitalizing existing features where cosmetic changes are the main goal. A renovation generally involves less structural change to no changes at all and could include painting, replacing flooring, updating fixtures, and refacing cabinets often considered a "spruce-up" or refresh. A home renovation is typically less complex and less expensive than remodeling and may not require permits in many cases.
When it comes to remodeling your home the focus is on structural changes such as the layout, or function of a space and aims to create something new or significantly alter the existing space. This often involves significant structural changes, such as moving walls, changing plumbing or electrical systems. Examples include reconfiguring a kitchen layout, adding a bathroom, or finishing a basement. A home remodel is typically more complex and more expensive than a renovation requiring professional contractors and often requires permits.
In essence a renovation is about making something old look new. Remodeling is about making something new out of something old. Therefore, the key difference lies in the extent of the changes made.
